"Got into the Scottish swing of things…"
i think they came as a result of years worth of pent up frustration at the “old boys club” mentality that permeates golf. there’s always such reluctance to implement any sort of change, whether that’s on the tour or in the cup. the european tour tends to be more forward thinking, especially in the ryder cup and in terms of taking player perspective and input into account. the u.s. seems to think that they can throw a captain out there that has no means with which to relate to his players. yes, tom watson is an amazing legend and a great guy, but he is twenty years removed from his last (much touted) captaincy. he’s twenty years older, and the guys out here now see him more as a great story, rather than a relevant, recent competitor. the european team does a fantastic job of picking captains who are both idolized AND relatable; they inspire their players to victory. they’ve found a method that works, and the u.s. seems perfectly content to stick to one that doesn’t, meaning going for records and reputation over someone capable of getting the most out of his players through communication or what have you.
that’s my long ass way of saying i understand where phil is coming from. and i think phil or jim furyk should captain next time. they would have such respect from all the guys out there now (not that men like tom or whoever don’t, but that’s more like reverence rather than camraderie), and they would shake up the strategy that has so far cost them the cup in this millennium (save for Zinger who was incredible and supports my point of choosing captains that will inspire greatness from their peers rather than just statements like “he’s a legend and a great golfer and i’m honored to be on his team”). they need someone to win for. can you imagine how hard keegan and jordan and rickie would fight to win for phil? he’s a guy they grew up watching in real time, who made them want to be golfers, rather than someone their parents and grandparents spoke of in reverent tones. not that young people can’t be inspired by guys like tom or jack or whoever, just that i don’t think it would carry the same weight.
or maybe i’m just spouting an old theory and sound like a cheap knockoff of brandel chamblee or something who knows. but i agree with phil
look at these two!
i seriously thought sergio was going to kiss rory just now. he was working for it
